Early this morning, Virgin Australia Boeing 777-300ER VH-VPE operating VA8 from Los Angeles (KLAX) to Brisbane (YBBN) diverted to Cairns. It is unknown as to why the 777 diverted, however, it is likely due to bad weather in Brisbane.
About an hour later, it departed for Brisbane (YBBN) as VA8.
Only last month, this 777 returned to Australia from Singapore after being repainted into the new Virgin Australia livery. Below is a photo I took of it departing Sydney in December 2013:
In fact, I believe this was the very last Virgin Australia 777 to be repainted into the new Virgin Australia livery.
This afternoon, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Airbus KC-30A MRTT A39-002 conducted a missed approach at Cairns Airport.
The KC-30A, one of five in the RAAF's fleet, departed RAAF Base Amberley (YAMB) and headed north to Cairns. Upon finals to Runway 15, the tanker conducted a missed approach and tracked back to RAAF Base Amberley (YAMB).
Below are photos of the event as it played out:
The modified A330-200 on approach to Runway 15
The KC-30A going missed
And back to Amberley
All five of the RAAF's KC-30A's are operated by No.33 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley.
