Yesterday, Hinterland Aviation ferried all of their aircraft to Georgetown.
Along with this, there have been other aircraft including Customs Dash 8s depart Cairns for Darwin and other cities and towns not affected by Cyclone Ita.
Most light aircraft have either departed Cairns to locations with calmer weather or have taken shelter in hangars at Cairns Airport.
At midnight last night Cairns Airport closed for the duration of the cyclone.
The last two passengers flights to arrive at Cairns last night before the airport closed were VH-VZU operating QF786 and VH-YIB operating VA797 both from Brisbane (YBBN).
After a quick turnaround, the two 737-800s both ferried out of Cairns back to Brisbane (YBBN) as QF6145 and VA9948 respectively.
Cairns Airport is currently still closed. This morning two international flights destined for Cairns diverted to other locations:
- Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300 B-LBA was operating Hong Kong - Cairns - Brisbane as CX103, however, went direct to Brisbane without landing in Cairns. It is expected to depart Brisbane direct to Hong Kong with no stopover in Cairns
- And Jetstar Airbus A330-200 VH-EBK was operating Narita - Cairns as JQ16 and diverted to the Gold Coast
And lastly, some planespotting photos from yesterday:

Whilst I was at the airport, I noticed a couple of aircraft were being towed to the northern GA apron. I believe this may have been to put them in a safer location before the Cyclone Ita arrived.
One of them was Customs Reims F406 VH-YZE
And another was Barrier Aviation Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander VH-BWO
