Cyclone Ita Creates Trouble at Cairns Airport

Today has been an interesting day in Cairns, with Cyclone Ita closing in and Cairns Airport re-opening for flights. The appalling conditions have caused multiple aircraft to conduct missed approaches and even divert to other airports.

At around midday today, Cairns Airport stated that the airport will reopen during the afternoon.

According to their announcement made HERE , Jetstar will commence limited operations and Virgin Australia will operate one return flight from Brisbane.

"Jetstar are commencing limited operations into and out of Cairns Airport from 1350 hrs today. Virgin are operating one return flight from Brisbane arriving at 1755 hrs tonight. All,other scheduled services for today are cancelled or rescheduled."

At the time of this post, Jetstar have operated four flights to Cairns; two flights from Sydney, one flight from Melbourne and one flight from Brisbane.

Amazingly, three of the four flights diverted to other airports due to poor visibility and severe turbulence!

The first aircraft to conduct a missed approach was Jetstar Airbus A320SL VH-VFQ from Sydney Kingsford Smith (YSSY) as JQ938.

Immediately after the unsuccessful approach VFQ then diverted to Brisbane (YBBN).

The second aircraft that attempted to land was Jetstar Airbus A320 VH-VGT from Sydney Kingsford Smith (YSSY) as JQ954, however, was also unsuccessful in landing.

The A320 then conducted a missed approach, went into a short holding pattern, and then tried again for another approach. Again, this approach was unsuccessful and so it too diverted to Brisbane (YBBN).

Next was Jetstar Airbus A320 VH-VGQ from Melbourne Tullamarine (YMML) as JQ946. Interestingly, VGQ did not even attempt a landing at Cairns, and instead, diverted to Townsville (YBTL).

And the last Jetstar aircraft to attempt a landing at Cairns was Jetstar Airbus A320 VH-VQS from Brisbane (YBBN) as JQ932. This was the only successful landing out of all four JQ aircraft!

Also, at the time of this post, two Virgin Australia aircraft have arrived in Cairns.

The first aircraft to land was Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 VH-YFJ from Sydney Kingsford Smith (YSSY) as VA1421.

And the second aircraft, this time from Brisbane (YBBN), was Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 VH-VON as VA785.
